scrappy blocks

I have to admit, that I purchased myself a new, HUGE iMac computer recently, to replace my older version.  It has a huge 27inch monitor that I absolutely LOVE.  It sits next to my sewing machine.  Good idea huh? nope, bad idea, as I do not listen to Pandora radio as often as I mean to.  In theory, I put the computer there, so I could listen to music and watch youtube "how to video's".  But what do I find myself doing?
Yes, that's right, I find myself playing Sims3, Bigfish games and face booking for longer and more often than I intend.  But something happened to me Friday night, that made me think, I need to sew more and I need to sew more right now.  So, I spent a few hours choosing colours, because as any quilter knows this is a fundamental step in getting it right, chose the right fabric.  Then I proceeded to slice and dice it up into the right proportions.
Does anyone else have the same problem that I do?  I line up the ruler on the mat and its all perfectly aligned, but once the rotary cutter slices,

through the fabric and you remeasure this piece, even though you lined it up perfectly to cut 2 x 2 or 4.5 x 3, it doesn't quite measure that anymore?  Its like the rotary cutter has some kind of dimensional shift attached to it.
It is a good thing that like B'lanna Torres, I too have leant to manually compensate over time, to stretch and pull and push those pieces to match eventually!
I am in a quilting group online, that swaps blocks every couple of months or so.  The groups are organised into hives and we just swap between the 6 of us, so that everyone makes 5 blocks for each.  At the end of each round, everyone signs up again, some new people join, some people drop out and the round begins again.  So far I have done two rounds and have received 10blocks,  The original aim of the round was to use what we had in our "scrap" fabric.  But who can resist the opportunity to go out and buy new fabric?  Well not me!!  These 3 blocks are for my own quilt, the blocks are a part of a pattern called "Around the World"  My aim was to make a "blue" quilt, as blue is my favourite colour.  Having said that, I actually have very few blue quilts, as I always seem to find a range of fabric that I love and sometimes blue isn't part of the palette.  I will have to take a photo of my other blocks, so I can see how my blocks fit the mix.  Some of the women from the group are joining the blocks as we go, but I think I will wait until I've done all four rounds so that I can really get the blend of the scrappy blocks just right for me.  Back to the sewing machine, olay!!www.facebook.com/ange67
